Social & Community

The original colours and themes that represent the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) could not provide sufficient categories for this project, a fourth category was needed to reflect the extensive engagement with changes in society, professional and social.  In undertaking further research, the National Archives note that there were other suffrage societies during the period in which the WSPU were operating

The largest society was the non-militant National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) whose colours were red, green and white.  Therefore, I have chosen to use ‘red’ as my fourth colour, in keeping with International Women’s Day’s association with women’s suffrage and emancipation.
